There are two ways to use your domain name with mail-list.com for your announcement list.
The first method is for the email to go to your mail server, which then immediately forwards it to our machine, via an alias file.
The second method involves creating a new subdomain, and changes to your domain name server (DNS).
You may decide which method works best for you.
In case you have any questions, please let us know at mdm@mail-list.com.
Please note that this is a premium option available for additional charges.
In order for mail-list.com to provide mailing list services on our machine, while using your Internet domain name, you will need to forward the appropriate email to our machine.
That is so when somebody emails to YourListName-change@yourdomain.com,
it will end up at mail-list.com for processing (where yourdomain.com is the name of your domain).
When we send email to your subscribers, we will always put your domain name in the headers of all out-going email.
There are several addresses that are used for your mailing list (Replace YourListName with the name of your list):
YourListName-on
YourListName-off
YourListName-change
YourListName-admin
YourListName-request
YourListName-list-owner
YourListName-help
YourListName-vacation
listmaster
You will need to forward these messages in their entirety, without any changes, to the same address at cirrus.mail-list.com.
The From: header must remain the same.
This mail forwarding should be done with your regular SMTP mail transfer agent (MTA), such as Sendmail, Exim, or Qmail.
If you use Sendmail, your alias file will looks like this:
YourListName-on: YourListName-on@cirrus.mail-list.com
YourListName-off: YourListName-off@cirrus.mail-list.com
YourListName-change: YourListName-change@cirrus.mail-list.com
YourListName-admin: YourListName-admin@cirrus.mail-list.com
YourListName-request: YourListName-request@cirrus.mail-list.com
YourListName-list-owner: YourListName-list-owner@cirrus.mail-list.com
YourListName-help: YourListName-help@cirrus.mail-list.com
YourListName-vacation: YourListName-vacation@cirrus.mail-list.com
If you are using a web hosting company, you will need to have them make these changes to their system. In many cases, you can accomplish this task yourself, via a control panel that they provide.
It is critical for you to accomplish this task before using your mailing list.
Should your subscribers receive any sort of error message from our machines, it typically asks them to send details of any problem to listmaster@mail-list.com. Add the following entry to your mail aliases should you want our listmaster to automatically handle those problems for you.
listmaster: listmaster@mail-list.com
To use this DNS technique of mail forwarding, you will need to make sure that mail-list.com has a unique sub-domain listed in our database. This sub-domain will only be used for email for your mailing list(s) hosted here at mail-list.com. Typically this domain would have at least 3 nodes.
The domain name server for your domain name controls where email is sent via Mail Exchange (MX) records. That is, when somebody on the Internet sends an email message to anybody at your domain name, their ISP will look up in the domain name server to see where to send it.
By adjusting your domain name server (DNS) to include our mail-list.com machine for a sub-set of your email, we can have their email come directly to our machine.
For example, if your domain name was xyz.com, then we could set up a sub-domain of that domain. Perhaps lists.xyz.com or mail-list.xyz.com.
We would use that complete domain name for your mailing list, and mail-list.com will re-write all headers with that complete domain name for your list on all outgoing email. So using the example above, people would subscribe to your list by sending a blank message to:
YourListName-on@lists.xyz.com
For example, using the Bind format of DNS entries
mail-list.com MX 10 transport.mail-list.com
mail-list.com MX 10 canon.mail-list.com
mail-list.com MX 5 cirrus.mail-list.com
The above says that cirrus.mail-list.com has the highest priority (lowest value) and all email should be sent directly to that machine. In the event that their ISP cannot reach cirrus.mail-list.com, then they will send the email to either of the other two mail hosts, where it will be accepted and queued for final delivery.
You would configure your domain name server to have all email come to our machine, by setting up MX records. There is no need to set up an A record, nor a CNAME record for this new name. Just the MX records.
You will want to set up several Mail Exchange records for this new domain name. The first couple of records will point to our secondary mail machines, and will have a low priority. The last MX record will point to our mail-list.com machine hosting your list, and will have a high priority. Note that a high MX value denotes a low priority, and vice versa.
Our machine will accept the email for this specific domain name, and when sending back the response, will set the headers to your domain name. So subscribers to the list will think the email is coming directly from your own domain.
